Nepali Pathshala of MD
Nepali Pathshala of Maryland (the Pathshala) is a volunteer driven platform to teach children how to read, write, and speak Nepali language; learn Nepali culture; and develop confidence in them by providing opportunities to showcase their talents such as Nepali dance, songs and other cultural activities at Nepali public events. All of this is expected to result better understanding and appreciation of Nepali language and culture among the children and help facilitate a better communicative and cultural relationships with extended family members back in Nepal and abroad.
The Pathshala, initiated by some enthusiastic parents in the Clarksburg area, achieved its institutional momentum with support from Nepal Education and Cultural Center (NECC). The Pathshala will be held at the premise of NECC, Beallsville, MD from 9:30AM to 11:30AM every Sunday.
The Pathshala has structured its program as below:
• Beginners (Kachhuwa) for age between 4 and 7: Children in this program will learn to read and write Nepali Alphabets/Numbers and understand basic and most commonly used Nepali words.
• Intermediate (Kharayo) for age between 8 and 11: Children in this program will learn to read short stories and engage in two-way conversation and also understand 500 most common words.
• Advance (Danfe) for age 12 and above: Children graduating from this program will have an advance understanding of Nepali writing and reading, and are able to engage in fluent conversational Nepali.
• Honors program (Mayur): Students graduating from Danfe may continue to honors program where they will be engaged with Pathshala as a volunteer teachers/helper. The typical age of the students in this program will be 15 and above.
New enrollment will open weeks before the start of each semester- Fall, Spring, or Summer, and its calendar will be closely aligned with MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) calendar. There will be an annual registration fee of $30 and monthly tuition fee of $10.
