New Pashupati Mandir: A Vision for Spiritual and Community Growth
The Nepal Education and Cultural Center (NECC) is excited to announce plans for a new Pashupati Mandir, to be constructed on the north side of the main building at 11650 Snowden Farm Parkway, Germantown, MD. This temple will embody traditional Nepali pagoda-style architecture, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Nepal. The envisioned two-story structure will feature an upper-level sanctum accommodating 100–125 devotees, dedicated spaces for priests, reception, donor recognition, and essential facilities like handwashing stations and shoe racks. The main entrance will face west, complemented by additional access from the south, and a 5-foot-wide porch will encircle the temple, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The upper level will serve as the primary worship area, housing the main deity, Lord Pashupati, along with other deities to be determined in consultation with experienced pundits. The design emphasizes a serene environment conducive to spiritual practices, with considerations for acoustics and space to support traditional rituals. The layout aims to facilitate smooth movement for devotees and provide dedicated areas for offerings and prayers.
The lower level is planned to support community functions, featuring a commercial kitchen, dining area, bathrooms, utility and storage rooms, and multipurpose spaces adaptable for pathshala (religious education), meetings, and additional pooja activities. This design reflects NECC’s commitment to fostering a holistic environment where spiritual, educational, and cultural activities can thrive in harmony.
While the current plan integrates both worship and community spaces within a single structure, NECC is also exploring the possibility of constructing separate buildings for the temple and assembly hall. This approach allows flexibility to best meet the evolving needs of the community. As the project progresses, NECC will continue to engage with community members, spiritual leaders, and architectural experts to ensure the new Pashupati Mandir becomes a beacon of cultural preservation and spiritual enrichment for generations to come.
